Chief Judge

Andrew Spinaze

Andrew Spinaze

Andrew is Senior Winemaker for Tyrrells based in the Hunter Valley completing over 40 vintages in the Hunter Valley alone. In that period Andrew has seen how stylistically how the industry has evolved.

He has been involved in the show system for over twenty odd years both regional and capital city shows. QANTAS Gourmet Traveller Finalist in 1999 and winner 2004 along with Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year 2007.

Panel Chairs

Erin Larkin

Erin is an independent wine writer, judge and presenter based in Perth, WA. She reviews Australian wines full time for Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

Prior to this, Erin was part of the Halliday Tasting Team, at the Halliday Wine Companion (her areas include all of Western Australia, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, the Limestone Coast and others in South Australia), and was a regular contributor to the Wine Companion Magazine.

“Full time wine drinker as well as writer: I host wine events when I’m not writing, I do videos when I’m not hosting, and I drink wine throughout it all.  Work doesn’t feel like work when you love what you do.  I spend my time talking about wine to the people who make it or to the people who drink it, and I only recommend the things that I love.  Drink well, time is short.”

Kate Goodman

Kate GoodmanAs a winemaker Kate creates wines that she loves to drink. Establishing Goodman Wines in 2012 gave Kate the freedom to share her journey with others and make wines that truly express her passion for life and bringing people together.

Kate is also the Head Wine Maker at Penley and winner of the 2024 Wine Maker of the Year at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards.

Kate’s wine journey has taken her from large family-owned wineries like Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale, to the iconic Seppelt in the Grampians, and to ground-breaking newcomers like Punt Road Wines in the Yarra Valley.

Kate has been fortunate enough to consult to an array of exceptional wine producers across Australia and has had pivotal career experiences participating in vintages in France, Spain and the United States.

Brendan Carr

Brendan is Operations Manager for Idee Fixe, leading a team of fizz fanatics who are exploring the unique and untapped potential of southern Margaret River Blanc de Blanc.
Prior to this, Brendan was the Winemaker for Xanadu for over a decade, where the team celebrated nine consecutive National Wine Show Cabernet trophies and the coveted Jimmy Watson trophy.

A Len Evans Tutorial scholar and a graduate of the ARWI AWAC, Brendan has been active regional and capital city wine show judge for over 10 years.

With more than 20 vintages under his belt, both domestically and abroad in the old and new world, Brendan has an intuitive approach to winemaking and a deep respect for the vineyard where he considers the true quality begins.

In his spare time, Brendan enjoys long walks along very short Margaret River beaches.

Judges

Steve Baraglia

Born and raised in the Barossa Valley, the wine industry has always been a big part of Steve’s life. From an early age he ‘worked’ in the small family vineyard at Williamstown, which ultimately lead to a career in the wine industry. In 2003, after finishing an Oenology degree and a Viticultural diploma at the University of Adelaide he joined the team at Pikes Wines in Clare where he is now the Chief Winemaker.  He is passionate about making wine and particularly loves working with Riesling.

Naked Run Wines was formed in 2005 when Steve and two university friends decided to make small batches of Riesling and Grenache. Since then the range has grown but their attitude hasn’t, with the aim to make balanced, small batch wines with drinkability. In late 2005 Steve and his wife Laura purchased a small vineyard in Sevenhill which grows Riesling, Shiraz, Mataro and Cabernet fruit.  Steve has judged at numerous wine shows around Australia and was a Len Evan scholar in 2023.

Matt Godfrey

Matt Godfrey recently joined the Credaro Family as Chief Winemaker following over 20 vintages. Matt grew up in one of Australia’s major wine regions, the Barossa Valley, in a winemaking family. Surprisingly, it was Matt’s early exposure to winemaking and a love of the ocean & sustainability that led him to initially follow different pursuits, namely marine biology & aquaculture.

It wasn’t until Matt caught the travel bug & was looking to fund his trips overseas that he worked at Wolf Blass winery that he found his passion for wine. He pursued his Oenology studies at Charles Sturt University & commenced winemaking during that time. Matt’s move to Devil’s Lair in Margaret River was in 2014.

Matt commenced his judging journey after being awarded Dux at the AWAC in 2016 & has judged at both regional & capital city shows.

Matt’s winemaking philosophy is about translating the site & variety into every bottle of wine and essentially be a caretaker for the effort, energy & passion that goes into agriculture & growing grapes.

Andrew Bretherton

Having grown up in Perth and far removed from the world of wine, it took a fortuitous stint in London discovering the diversity of European wine to turn Andrew’s mind to the possibility of winemaking in Australia.

After completing Oenology at the University of Adelaide in 2008, he worked vintages in the Mosel, Burgundy and Chianti Classico whilst honing his craft in the Yarra Valley at De Bortoli Estate, prior to making the journey home to WA, where he was Senior Winemaker at Deep Woods Estate for 6 years.

Currently Head Winemaker at Juniper Estate, Margaret River, Andrew is passionate about crafting beautiful wines from beautiful sites. He has strong belief in the quality and uniqueness of Margaret River Chardonnay and Cabernet and feels blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world.

Actively involved in regional and capital city wine shows for over a decade, Andrew is excited to be a Len Evans scholar in the upcoming 2026 tutorial.

Chris Murtha

Chris is a winemaker at Castelli Estate in Denmark and has been producing cool climate wines in the Great Southern for over ten years.

Growing up in Perth, early wine experiences came from work in liquor retail, followed by a decision to study winemaking at Curtin University in Margaret River. In 2008 Chris graduated as Dux, collecting the Houghton Medallion for Excellence, awards for Sensory Evaluation, Viticulture and the Talijancich- Leeuwin Award which provided scholarship for an international vintage opportunity.

A strong interest in cool climate wine styles developed early on, leading Chris to work in Tasmania, Oregon and Champagne before settling in the Great Southern in 2012.

Chris and partner Silvia’s current side hustle is the rejuvenation of a small 40-year-old organic vineyard in Mount Barker with a view to producing some small batch wines. Current main hustle, raising a young family and loving life in Denmark.

Sam Badger

Sam’s started his wine story in hotels back in the UK before moving to Australia at the age of 18 to “follow a girl” after years pulling corks across the states wine bars like Must Highgate, Must Margaret River & Wino’s.

In 2010 he was a Scholar of the Sommeliers Australia Education Scholarship. In 2011 he took the plunge into production to get his hands dirty starting at Woodlands Wines as a Vintage Cellar hand. With a later stint in Napa Valley at Spotteswoode Wines in 2016.

2020 has marked his 10th Vintage at Woodlands where he now heads up production as Winemaker.

Sean Ou

Sean Ou served the highly acclaimed Singapore Airlines as a Sommelier and Trainer for 11 years before clipping his wings.

His long aspiration to become a Master of Wine has led him down the path of achieving the elusive WSET Level 4 Diploma.

In addition to being a Wine Communicator, his repertoire also extends to being a Sake Specialist and Spirits Evangelist, partaking in international judging duties.

His past professional experience also spans across serving as Head of Wine for Southeast Asia under the SARMENT Group and currently he sits as the Head of Education for the BEVERAGE CLIQUE ACADEMY.
